I saw the film Bazodee today and was quite impressed with the showcase of Trinidadian culture. Bazodee gives us true Caribbean flavor with a bit of Bollywood flair. Bazodee was filmed in Trinidad & Tobago. The movie features well-known Trinidadian soca artist Machel Montano. Also featured are: Natalie Perera, Kabir Bedi, Teneille Newallo, Cindy F. Danielle, Staz Nair, Valmike Rampersad, Remy RemBunction, Chris Smith, Pauline Mark, Kriss Dosanjh, and Rahul Nath.
Bazodee on a whole was fun, lighthearted, and entertaining. The Trinidadian term, “Bazodee” is used to describe a feeling of disorientation and dizziness, usually associated with love and attraction. Bazodee is a typical love story (woman meets man and is torn between family duty and love). A major plus for me was that the film is infused with the rhythm of soca music (all written by Machel Montano of course). I did not care much for the ending though, which ironically consisted of a musical number. I really think they could have done a much better job with that scene.
All that aside, I enjoyed this festive and upbeat film. I love that Trinidadian culture is highlighted throughout the movie. The soundtrack is amazing and had me singing and dancing in my seat during the entire film. You actually feel the spirit of carnival and get to see the melting pot of cultures with a bit of everyday life in Trinidad and Tobago. The j’ouvert and tassa scenes were two of my favorite parts. Bazodee does a tremendous job in giving the world a glimpse of the music and culture of Trinidad and Tobago.
