Christ the Redeemer, the statue of Jesus Christ that watches over the city of Rio de Janeiro from Mount Corcovado, is one of Brazil’s most popular landmarks. The statue is a cultural icon and is one of the new seven wonders of the world. It is a must-see if you are traveling to Rio. In fact, because of its height and location on the summit of Mount Corcovado, it can be seen from anywhere in Rio. But don’t stop there! You don’t just want to see the Christ the Redeemer statue! You want to go all the way to the top of it!
Okay, perhaps not exactly on top of it, but you can visit Christ the Redeemer and feel as if you are on top of the world! There a few options to get there, via train, van, bus, or hike (not sure I’d hike though). Once you arrive at the top of Mount Corcovado, you will take the stairs or elevator to get to the statue. If you take the stairs, you can stop at various lookout points. There are usually lots of people but if you go early enough you may avoid the crowd. What is there to do at the top? Why take in the breathtaking view of Rio of course!
A little background: The Christ the Redeemer statue was built in 1931 as a tribute to the princess regent of Brazil (Isabel). The statue is 98 feet tall, with outstretched arms spanning 92 feet. There is a small chapel at the base where some couples have gotten married.
The Christ the Redeemer statue is the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world and is a popular attraction for many tourists. But for the people of Brazil, it is much more than that. It is a symbol of faith and hope, it is a symbol of culture, it is a symbol of Brazil itself.
If you are in Rio, you definitely want to take the time and visit Christ the Redeemer. If you are adventurous you can organize this trip on your own or if you want to avoid the hassle you can just book a tour with a reputable company. Either way, it will be well worth it.
